Briefings

Baumgartner was a great soak early in the morning, but as the
campground began to wake up the pool began to fill-up... with
people. We felt lucky to have enjoyed a soak for about an hour with
only a handful of other people. If you were in a helicopter it would
have looked like steams of people trickling out of their campsites
and converging into a thicker stream that converged directly on the
hot springs. The key here anytime of year is to soak early. The pool
is drained daily, bright an early.

I finally made it out to Baumgartner after many trips in the
surrounding area. It was a sweet soak to say the least. We camped at
the Willow Creek transfer camp the night before, got up early,
packed up and drove over to the campground. Even arriving at 6:30am
we were 2nd to get to the pool. After some talking with a couple
regulars I found out that the pool was just resurfaced this year; it
did indeed look brand spanking new. Before the construction of the
well-designed concrete pool by the Forest Service Baumgartner's pool
was located in a sandy pit slightly above the pool's present
location. Apparently, the hot springs used to belong to a one John
Baumgartner; who eventually gave it to the Forest Service after
tending it for years. Expect lots of people and families at this
location; swimsuits are required.
