Weir Creek Hot Springs

Weir Creek Hot Springs is a crystal-clear forest soak in the Clearwater National Forest near Lolo, Montana, reached by a short but steep hike from the Highway 12 corridor. Its enlarged main pool runs 105–108°F and holds 8–10 soakers, making it one of the most popular wilderness soaks in North-Central Idaho — expect company, and pack out more than you pack in.

Pool Condition

The main pool was enlarged in 2006 and now fits roughly 8–10 people. It is deeper than the original pool, with a solid rock bottom that is somewhat V-shaped; the original soaking plank is still in use, and the creek-facing walls have been reinforced with mortar. Below the main pool, an enlarged creek-side soaker with rock walls and a sandy/gravel bottom offers warm (not hot) water. An older secondary pool is no longer in use — its outflow was diverted into the main pool. A second, smaller pool built upstream in 2009 (about 100°F) and a warm upper pool (~94°F) have also been reported by visitors over the years.

Seasonal Notes

The lower portions of the trail submerge during spring runoff — stick to the upper trail, which is steep in places; a trekking pole or walking stick helps on this brief, slanting hike year-round. In low water, follow the main (most worn) path above the series of primitive campsites; after the last site the trail drops to Weir Creek, and from there stay as low as possible, often walking short stretches of the creek bottom, until you reach the springs.

Camping

There are nice primitive sites near the trailhead and parking area, but don’t expect privacy — the well-used trail runs right next to (and an alternate trail through) the sites. Three more primitive sites sit beyond and across from the hot springs, and there are plenty of official campgrounds near the trailhead and additional primitive sites down the road. Many visitors car-camp at the trailhead around the fire pit. The area has been seeing an influx of use and abuse — tread lightly.
