Lightfoot Hot Springs

Lightfoot Hot Springs is a neglected, rarely visited soak about 20 miles from Featherville in the Sawtooth National Forest โ€” and it starts with a trap for the unwary: the signed pools beside the road are a decoy. The real Lightfoot pools lie on the far side of the South Fork Boise River, reached by a dirt forest road, a pack bridge, and a short hike (or a river ford, not advised during spring runoff). What waits there, on the only documented visit, was underwhelming: stagnant, dirt-lined pools in a weed-infested area, badly in need of reconstruction.

Pool Condition

Dirt-lined pools with silt- and algae-laden bottoms; water clarity murky and dark, with a slight odor. Usage is ultra low, and little maintenance happens here โ€” treat this as a springs-hunter’s curiosity rather than a destination soak.

Seasonal Notes

The forest road closes seasonally from October through mid-May, with the May opening depending on snow level.

Camping

Many primitive and official camping opportunities are nearby, but there is no camping at the springs themselves.
