Vulcan Hot Springs

Vulcan Hot Springs is one of Idaho’s most unusual hot springs: a short hike through the Boise National Forest, in the Warm Lake area, reaches a source so strong that the US Department of Energy studied its geothermal potential for years. Its main pool was once reputedly the largest natural hot springs pool in Idaho โ€” but a wildfire-era cave-in filled it with silt and sludge, and today, per the latest update, only one small pool remains soakable.

Description

The source flow at Vulcan is enormous, and rumors have long circulated that the complex could be developed into a geothermal power plant. The historic main pool was huge โ€” almost too large, with slow-moving water. Today the log dam still stands, but the primary pool is caved in and choked with silt; a smaller pool offers the current soak, with real potential for the main pool to be restored someday. Red spider mites (chiggers) are active here in low amounts โ€” keep clothing and towels off the ground near the springs.

Seasonal Notes

Accessible all year. The dirt forest access road is not plowed during winter; winter access is on horseback or snowshoe.

Camping

The trailhead area changed significantly after wildfire restoration: the Forest Service removed the old pit toilet and primitive campground, a new pit toilet stands across the road from the trailhead, and only a couple of small pullouts remain for parking โ€” the trailhead sign is not visible from the road. The closest primitive campsites are 1โ€“2 miles down FSR 474 South. Check current conditions with the Boise National Forest before heading in.
